When helmets make no sense

Got this in my mail thought I'd share!

SERIOUSLY? A helmet to protect your head in case of a fall?

The Beauty of Leaving Comments!

Blogging is one of the most symbiotic relations there can be. Meaning that we all depend on each other. Why do people have blogs? It's a way for some to reach out to others, for some to share with others, for some to teach. In short we all want an audience.

This is one of the few times in life that people choose you on the basis of your inner self - not the way you look. It's nice to meet people and so liberating to let go and write without fear of censure or judgment.

Of course for it to succeed like any other symbiosis both parties have to benefit and that is where the amazing system of comments comes in. Anyone reading this will know - its quite an amazing feeling when someone takes the time and effort to leave behind what they think whether its a single line or a bigger explanation.

So much better than than just seeing an avatar in 'Recent Readers' widget.

It's the best way to introduce yourself - form a relation, a network that slowly expands and you build a group of people who become your familiars...and is it happens in a symbiotic relation its the best way for not only the person you left a comment for to reach your blog but also other people who have visited that blog. I know I check out a lot of blogs of the people who leave comments not only on my blog but other blogs...

A comment is a snapshot of you and your blog! And you never know who you will meet as a result of extending a small courtesy of taking your times and writing something and acknowledging another's existence.

It's just a nice thing to do - it makes me happy leaving comments, leaving traces of my presence in someone else's world!

Its just like saying hello when you meet someone for the first time or visit their house!!!

Snatched Voices

Can we live our lives in a day ?
Can that day hold more joy for us than a lifetime?
A lifetime of meaningless smiles and studied perfection?
Light and dark...
Can we take the performance any longer?
Even if we get the prize of performance
The prize for surviving... the prize for just making it through
...the party we celebrate
Populated by people laughing to cover the deafening silence
Desperately trying not to find anything meaningful
No one who wants to talk about anything that matters
And how we try to capture
Everything that happens in a moment
The history of our feelings
Of who we were once
Can anyone put that down on paper
Can anyone capture the moment
And if we do..
If we do..
Won't it start meaning less... no matter where we start

Does it matter?

Ode to colours [in prose]

I used to be a person who only loved black and almost all my clothes were black and then suddenly one day I just stopped finding black such a fascinating colour [actually black is the shade of objects that do not reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum. Scientifically black is not a hue (color); a black object absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them, this is sometimes confused with black being called 'a mixture of all colors' but that is not the case]

Colours affect many aspects of our life, our moods and perceptions and they have physical as well as psychological effects. Haven't you sometimes entered a room and immediately felt one with it or just fell in love with it? It's because colours vibrate at different frequencies and create a reaction in all of us.

The symbolism of colours in different religions and countries and how they affect health

PURPLE
  • Purple is traditionally worn by priests for ceremonies
  • Thailand: Color of mourning (widows)
  • Western: Royalty
Positive: Encourages dignity and respect; helps to stabilize the hormones; can help with stress
Negative: Avoid if you lack stamina or are feeling sensitive

BLUE
  • In Christianity the Virgin Mary is always shown wearing blue
  • For Buddhists, blue represents the calm of the heavens and waters
  • Cherokees: Defeat, trouble
  • Iran: Color of heaven and spirituality
  • Western: Depression, sadness, conservative, corporate, "something blue" bridal tradition
Positive: Calms tension and induces life changes; reduces swelling, heals cuts and bruises, and soothes burns and headaches
Negative: Avoid if you are depressed; it is not stimulating and can increase feeling of isolation

GREEN
  • In Islam green is a sacred colour
  • Western: Spring, new birth, go, Saint Patrick's Day, Christmas (with red)
Positive: Soothes the emotions and is good for general healing and restoring the body cells and lung problems. Dissolves blood clots
Negative: Can bring about stagnation, repression and feelings of jealousy [I guess that's why they call it he little green monster ;)]

YELLOW
  • For Hindus, bright yellow represents light, truth and immortality
  • For Buddhists it is a sacred colour - their monks wear saffron robes
  • China: Nourishing
  • Egypt: Color of mourning
  • Japan: Courage
  • India: Merchants
  • Western: Hope, hazards, coward
Positive: Brings inspiration and good self-expression, beneficial for indigestion and inflammatory problems of the joints and body tissues

Negative: Can cause irritability and exhaustion and may cause further self-criticism

ORANGE
  • In Japan and China orange is the colour of love and happiness
  • Western: Halloween (with black), creativity, autumn
Positive: Helps creativity, relieves headaches and colds and improves the functioning of the heart
Negative: Not good if you feel frustrated or sad, aggravates feeling of nausea

RED
  • Symbolic of the ancient Egyptian sun god, Ra.
  • Buddhism regards red as the colour of creativity and life
  • China: Good luck, celebration, summoning
  • Cherokees: Success, triumph
  • Russia: Bolsheviks and Communism
  • Eastern: Worn by brides
  • Western: Excitement, danger, love, passion, stop, Christmas (with green)
  • For the Chinese, red is the colour of passion and luck and represents the sun and the phoenix; the red phoenix represents opportunity, luck, strength and immortality
Positive: Stimulates vitality and energy, helps when we are tired aids anemia and colds
Negative: Avoid if you are angry or have high blood pressure or flu

WHITE
  • Japan: White carnation symbolizes death
  • Eastern: Funerals
  • Western: Brides, angels, good guys, hospitals, doctors, peace (white dove)
  • A white wedding gown stands for innocence and purity
Positive: Gives insight into life and purifies body on all levels; can alleviate pain
Negative: Can increase feelings of isolation, bad for making decisions

BLACK
  • In ancient Egypt black was linked to deities and black cats were sacred [I had 7 black cats!]
  • China: Color for young boys
  • Western: Funerals, death, Halloween (with orange), bad guys, rebellion
Positive: Helps to provide self-sufficiency, control and protection.
Negative: If you feel depressed or are in self-denial, black can make you reject help from other

Dubai - Playground of the Rich & Famous

I live in a strange land with strange people - so advanced yet so primitive at the same time.

It truly is a land of extremes but the great thing about it is, that it lets people be whoever they choose to be. In the same space you will see a girl in the shortest of short skirts and a woman who is covered from head to toe literally...

But we all do manage to co-exist.

It is a land of immense wealth, the malls are truly made like palaces and every designer in the world can be found here. People can be seen around with their Burberry and Loius Vuitton bags... kings and queens of their respective castles.

There is this obsession with having suffixes attached to everything - Dubai already has the world's tallest hotel, vastest man-made harbor and biggest indoor ski area.

Workers are now raising an office tower expected to be the world's tallest building, while plans are underway to build the globe's largest shopping mall, the biggest airport and a resort featuring full-size replicas of the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal.

Recently I had come across some blog which said that Dubai didn't have any bars and I almost died laughing - there are numerous bars here and dance music is especially popular.

It's rocking here! Everyone drinks but they are extremely hard on drugs and you are liable to be put in jail even if you have had a joint outside of Dubai but they find traces of drugs in your system

The rents increase exponentially and getting a taxi is the hardest thing you can do - and the heat will - well the heat will boil you in the summers. But they have a ski slope in a mall.

A frickin' SKI SLOPE in a desert in a mall!!!

And the cars!

You'll see the best cars from Lamborghini's to Ferraris. I even saw an Enzo Ferrari here once. Every car imaginable from a stretch Hummer to a SLR, you fantasize about it and you see it!

Nobody likes self service here and mostly every place, people serve you. There is no concept of throwing your empty coke and fries into the bin after eating at McDonalds- the cleaning guy will come and do it. Everyone changes here - even the expats.

It assimilates people into its way of life and its luxuries.
Nannies for kids, spas, regular manicures and pedicures and blow dries.
{Thank God I haven't YET been affected by the disease thats because I am a lazy bum;)]

Just a couple of projects to give you all an idea: [this is just the icing]

About Bawadi
"Launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in May 2006, Bawadi is the world’s largest hospitality and leisure development, including the world’s largest shopping experience. The AED 100 billion project will feature 31 hotels, including Asia Asia – with 6,500 rooms. In total the City of Bawadi will offer more than 29,000 rooms.
The world’s largest shopping area, which will offer over 40 million square feet of gross lease-able area (GLA).

Another latest ambitious project is called The Dancing Towers designed by an Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid

'The towers incorporate avant-garde definitions of functionality and form that will not only create a distinctive landmark at Business Bay, but also symbolises a new phase in Dubai's architectural standards.'

The towers are inter-twinned to share programmatic elements and rotate to maximize the views from the site towards the creek and neighbouring developments.

Note to self: I wonder how the elevators would work in this

Dubai Towers - Dubai

Inspired by the movement of candles this is a stunning piece of architecture - it will be surrounded by seven lush green islands.

Dubai Towers labels itself as the ultimate 'corporate experience'.

Like I said we love using superlatives here in Dubai

Dubai Hydropolis - underwater resort [seriously!]

Hydropolis, billed as 'the underwater ultra luxury resort hotel' was supposed to be completed by October 2006 but has now been delayed till end of this year. It will be located on the coastline of Dubai, already home to the Burj al-Arab, the world's first seven star hotel, and the site where construction is currently underway on The Palm, a resort comprising two vast man made islands which will be visible from space.

Joachim Hauser describes the concept for the hotel thus: "With Hydropolis an habitat will materialise for the first time worldwide which sets completely new standards with respect to the quality of experience and living. Hydropolis provides an ambiance in the last uninhabited frontiers on earth in which a visit will be an unforgettable experience in the life of each individual guest..."

The 107,700 m2 development will be built at a depth of 20m, around 300m from the coastline. It will be structured in three elements: a land station, connecting tunnel, and submarine complex.

But right now none of it is ready so all you see is construction. Investors from across the world are pouring in money, turning the city into a giant construction site. More than 50 skyscrapers are going up simultaneously, and it is said that about 30 percent of the world's cranes are in Dubai.

The traffic is insane - the metro is under construction and will be ready by 2010.

Environmentalists say that the construction of man-made islands on Dubai's coast is destroying coral, sea grasses and oyster beds, as well as killing fish and sea turtles.

The islands are also disrupting the natural currents of the gulf, leading to erosion of Dubai's white-sand beaches.

Don't they say beauty is skin-deep?

But all said and done it is quite a unique place to live in!

An emotionally spent day!

This is going to be a short blog - it's so strange and unfamiliar, the person that blogging has unleashed in me. I have always been the girl who looks the sweetest and the happiest - all sunshine and rainbows and pretty bubbles.

Nothing further away from the truth. It's difficult for me to share with people, my feelings of pain - so my shiny, happy exterior helps me give the impression that there's is nothing going on with me and I' happy and free.

Blogging has helped me relinquish control over my my feelings, there's something so wonderfully liberating and nonjudgmental or consequential about showing emotions through words . To a person who is a control freak in an almost scary proportion this is heaven. It's been such a difficult day for me today and even as I write this I feel the reticent, parts of my personality cringe at showcasing such a vulgar display of emotion. But I'm so damned scared and upset.

My dad has a bypass on the 29th of this month for which I'm going home, and my mom just had local chemotherapy for some sort of tumor that keeps coming up and I'm so damned far away.

This whole day, I have been pretending to be this totally okay person in front of everyone because I hate showing my vulnerability to people - I feel naked and exposed so I pretend... but now in this present moment I feel spent.

And I can just break down and cry - because I can't imaging a world without my parents.

Will probably hate myself for this outpouring of emotion tomorrow but anesthetized by wine right now.

Good night everyone and please pray for my dad's operation!

Love to all the mothers!!!!!

I can think of things that are good, but “good” by

So, “what’s good?” Ice Cream!

Socially Retarded: Thursday Thirteen...attempt #2

Thirteen Reasons Why I Think I Might Be Socially Retarded :(

1. It's easier for me to connect to people on a mental plane here on planet blog rather than in daily life. Sad but true.

2. I actually 'dread' making plans on the phone and beg my husband to do it. Not exaggerating

3. I'd rather read a good book or be on my computer than go out with people [except going dancing...I just love dancing - you don't have to be very socially accomplished to do that]

4. The problem is that when I put my mind to it I can be quite great at being the life of the party even, but the pleasure/pain trade-off doesn't make it worth the effort.

5. At times, if there's the biggest shoe around I will find it to put in my mouth. Sometimes I don't think before I talk - for example I actually called someone else a social retard on their face once [I had called myself one too, but still] not even thinking that they may not like it. I honestly thought it was a compliment and was made to realize later that it was stupid! It doesn't happen very often but when it does its bad!

6. I am argumentative and like to have the last word - and sometimes get carried away in the heat of the conversation. Can end up being extremely sarcastic. [Characteristic - Under renovation/repair]

7. My MBA has made my social degeneration truly complete. Full circle here!

8. I'm very honest - and at the same time I don't like hurting people's feelings so the best alternative is not to meet many people

9. I have been spoiled by the fact that I have 4 best friends since childhood - and everyone else pales in comparison to them plus I don't like to gossip - except maybe with them. Unfortunately we all live thousands of miles apart :(

10. I hate the concept of networking - its seems to me like one is using people. I find that very distasteful. If someone doesn't interest me I don't see the point of hanging out just for the sake of having a 'big' social group.

11. I look very different from what I feel - so people end up think I'm some cute silly girl [the fact that I used to be a host for some entertainment kind of show on Tv doesn't help -I'm labeled & stereotyped] that annoys me terribly and so I act even more stupid then they think I am

12. I'm making this list - what does that say...

13. I think that maybe I like to take cover in calling myself socially retarded, I am actually an abnormally lazy bum

Pleasure - the Greatest Driver Of All

I am a hedonist - and don't feel guilty about it and don't see why I should. But somehow it seems that most of us think that seeking pleasure is wrong and somehow feel guilty about it. 'Hedonism' is seen as being selfish - but why? What if someone got the maximum pleasure in helping others. Would we still think that was being selfish?

I am not saying anything that some philosopher hasn't said before, of course it goes without saying that I would not be able to express it with even one hundredth of the finesse. But somehow something strikes you whilst doing the simplest of things - in this case eating Haagan Daz' Belgian Chocolate ice cream ... my favorite.

Enjoying my ice cream and thinking that I had better start going to the gym again, I reflected upon the nature of pleasure...it seemed fitting and most appropriate to think of pleasure with the ice cream cup in my hand

We do so much for pleasure we endure pain to get to pleasure - think about those long hard hours at the gym, or studying for an exam to get an A+... the ultimate act of creation, a baby. Immense pleasure for which we are ready to go through maximum pain. Although here would be a contradiction of the hedonistic theory of maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain - the pleasure far outweighs the pain - in both intensity and duration

Is it in our DNA to desire pleasure? A child is very very clear in his/her mind about this - laugh at things that feel good and cry the house down when feeling bad.

Is pleasure what makes us 'moral'?

When we feel that we have done something to harm someone unnecessarily, and if we start to feel bad about it, we want to repent and try to mend our ways. Why? Because we want the feeling of guilt niggling away at us to go away, we want to feel better about ourselves.

When men cheat on their wives or vice versa why do they confess? Because they 'respect' their partners? They wouldn't have bloody cheated on them if they did.
No because their guilt makes them feel rotten and the only way to make the feeling go away is to confess. Getting the burden of the shoulders so to speak.

Why do we love someone? Is it possible that the reason lies in the fact that they make us feel that we are special and better than others - they picked us over others so we must be better. And of course this realization leads to... guess what... pleasure .

Do we do 'good' deeds for the same reason? Think about it... the rush of happiness when we help someone or when we feel that we have made a difference to someone's life.

Doesn't that make the quest for pleasure a 'good' in itself?

And if we take it further couldn't it be possible, that we are afraid to go to hell [for those of us who believe in hell] because we know hell will be a darned painful place - very very far away from pleasure indeed!

Encounter Of A 'Strange' Kind

Hell hath no fury... and boy did I truly appreciate the veracity of this very apt saying.

My husband and I had gone for a barbecue to a friend's house. It was a very pleasant evening, sitting outside in his garden, enjoying the beautiful weather. Met a lot of new people, a couple of South African gentlemen, some other couples, a woman who had been in the Olympics she used to play badminton professionally for seven years. I can't recall where she was from I think Russia or Poland or somewhere. She was cool.

So this woman who this story is about [not the Olympiad] but a seriously insane gal, was the host's current girlfriend or love interest I don't know which. It was the first time I was meeting her. When we entered she was dancing away a little drunk. Well we got the hello, hi and other pleasantries out of the way and then my hubby and I went and sat outside. She stayed inside... dancing to her own crazy tune.

After a delicious dinner, guitars were brought out and someone started singing. It was a lovely summer breeze and the ambiance was just right, people who hadn't met before gelling together because of good music and good wine and just the spirit to make it a nice evening. At one point she came out, gave us all a pointed stare then went inside and turned the music full blast [she really did have no manners or social graces] anyway the jam session outside had to end. But I think we were enjoying it so much that some brave soul ventured in and switched off the music [Aside: I think this must have been the point that she lost the few marbles she had left in her brain]. Up till now the unhinging of the 'crazy' one was silent. Silent but deadly.

People started singing outside again. She came out for a brief drunken interlude to say that she didn't like the singing coz she wanted to dance that we all were boring old farts [not in the same exact words but that was the gist]. Later on our host joined us as we sung Simon and Garfunkel songs.

This incident, I'm talking about happened when I had to go the ladies room. I went to a room where I had gone earlier as I was not too familiar with the house, it was only my second visit there, and the other bathroom was occupied. The room was dark and the door slightly ajar, so I went in. At this point I didn't know that there was someone else in the room then I saw a figure lying on the bed, I apologized politely and started to back out when I saw the figure lift its head.

It was then this woman sprang out of bed and literally lunged after me screaming obscenities. She starts shouting and accusing me, saying stuff like, 'just because i was sleeping with her boyfriend/our host [whom by the way I'd met twice in my life] it didn't give me the right to enter the room and switch on the lights [which I hadn't done as I had not gone in far enough to even get to the light], who did i think I was etc etc.

Really taken aback, I tell her she's mistaken, I'm very happily married, here with my husband and all I wanted to do was use the bathroom, really urgently, but nothing had any effect on her it was as if she were waiting to pounce on me as soon as she got the opportunity.

There I'm standing shocked out of my skull, wanting desperately to go to the loo and this shrieking banshee is coming at my throat.

It shames me to say it but I ran out, I didn't want to create a scene at some one's house, someone that I didn't even know that well, who was my husbands' new friend or fall to her obviously low standards. As luck would have it, it was hubby that was in the other loo. I pounded on the door and told him to either come out or let me in because by this time I seriously wanted to punch her out.

The banshee followed me, my hubby came out and told her to bloody well stop screaming at me but she wouldn't, she kept saying such horribly ugly stuff. By this time I was in tears I know that sounds wimpy but it's terrible to have someone screaming at you, I have never had anyone treating me with such animosity or disrespect or assassinating my character like this. I think I was crying with rage.

My hubby told the host to control his girl. I have never seen him so angry, if he wasn't such a gentleman he would seriously have slapped her. Now the host is, one of the nicest people I've met since we moved here, very hospitable and polite and well mannered. So he was mortified.

I came out in the garden she continued her screaming inside now at him, I wanted to go back inside now that the initial shock had subsided, and let her have a piece of mind, but my husband and the other guests told me to let it go and ignore her as she had been having temper tantrums on and off the whole evening from even before we got here. Anyway we sat for a while and then left with our host profusely apologetic. I wished I had slapped the bitch!

The funny thing is that to this date, I don't understand what pushed her over the edge, why she turned on me at all, why she said what she did and what led to the entire twisted thought process. I hardly had any contact with her as I was outside the whole evening.

Do women get so jealous of any other passably good looking woman who is treated with respect and regard? And she was a really attractive looking woman herself so why would she suffer from low self esteem and act so weird.

I guess self esteem and self respect have got nothing to do with looks or maybe too much alcohol just ain't good for ya!

I have had only two such intense confrontations, this one that happened almost two years ago and another fairly recently, but boy, women are so much scarier then men!!!

We are now pretty friendly with the aforementioned host minus the psycho. We were talking about it today and laughing away, so I thought I'd share my encounter of the third kind!!!

... empty spaces [a very personal fear]

I am supposed to say something
I feel the weight upon me
I open my mouth
My fingers still as I type
... and I realize
What if I have nothing meaningful to say
Should I still say something
Should I still try to fill the silence
The weight of expectation
more mine than anyone else's
it weighs me down
I feel the coldness of fear
my heart constricts
and with horror I realize
what if I never had something to say?

Labels

Have you noticed how when you ask someone about another person the first thing they do is launch into a description of the person's physical self. Since the first time we recognize ourself in the mirror we base our identity on our outer appearance.

Throughout our life we label ourselves, 'I'm an introvert', 'I am a reflective person' or 'I am funny', 'I'm this...I'm that'. We use these to describe ourself when we meet people for the first time. If its not a physical description then its what we do, our marital status, our hobbies.

But is that who we are?

We hide behind all these labels, as they prevent us from really looking inside and examining what lies beneath. We feel comfortable with the descriptions, a safety cushion that provides us with convenient scapegoats.

They become our justification for not changing or even making an effort to change.

But what happens when someone we love and care deeply about perceives us as different from the way we have marked ourselves in our head, we feel shaken and confused, and when someone whose opinion and their intelligence we respect we actually start doubting ourself.

Growing up, the picture we have of our self is governed by what we hear our loved ones describe us as and unconsciously we start to model ourself on those labels. So starts an anthology of personal mythologies. These are the voices we hear and we create our persona around them and use it to describe and classify all our actions.

To be totally honest about oneself is the most difficult thing that anyone can do and even if they do it - its one thing to know exactly who you are and another thing to let others see the real you.

Dark vs Light

So I was watching Spiderman and I realized that in a battle, internal or otherwise there is a great part of us that gravitates towards the darker side. It repulses and fascinates us at the same time.

Why is the black suit perceived as more powerful than Spiderman even by himself? When choosing to go for an important fight he chooses the black costume, subconsciously admitting its superiority.

The darker side of Spiderman has more force, allure and presence, makes us notice more...

The entire theatre was cheering as the alter ego of Spidey lets people have it, not caring about hurting sensitive feelings, for once telling it like it is. There was a thrill seeing someone who couldn't stand up for himself before do so.

It led me to question whether we somehow perceive good as being less - if someone is good are they considered weak and unable to stand up for themselves? Do we doubt that good can win that it will be strong enough? Somehow bad always seem to have the better odds of succeeding in life. Are we attracted towards the bad more easily than towards the good?

Or is it the case of an attraction, not so much to good or bad, but to that which is superior?

Is it in our genetic make-up to look up to someone who can conquer us - people better than us - stronger than us or smarter than us?

I wonder whether we are innately structured to seek out leadership - to seek out the powerful, to follow?

To despise that which is weak and idolize that which is stronger and better, whether physically, mentally or in any other way!

What if we had 3 eyes?

So my last post got me thinking of the subjectivity of our view of beauty.

Imagine if all of us had been born with three eyes - then that would be normal. And if we ever saw someone with two eyes we'd think that they were a freak. We'd be pointing fingers and thinking 'oh the poor guy/girl'

How funny - the monster would be a two-eyed monster - [hey I think I am getting confused here, it wasn't a three eyed monster but a three-headed dog called Cerberus, hound of Hades. Anyway I am sure there is a monster in fiction with 3 eyes... as long as you get the point.

What we are used to seeing becomes normal and even beautiful for us and anything not familiar is automatically 'ugly' or freakish.

I suppose part of our defense mechanism... the human imperative to survive or perish

So why do we call it 'Art'

Is there a universal definition of 'art'?

Who decides what is art? These days everything seems to be termed 'art' but what is the criteria for something being called that?

Is it beauty - that can't be, there are certain works of art designed not to be beautiful, especially these days when people seem to be fascinated by the opposite of beauty, so who is to say that isn't art?. For something to be a work of art, beauty is not always a requirement. Another argument against beautiful being the definition of art is that beauty, truly, is in the eye of the beholder although of course there are things that can be termed 'beautiful' universally, take a sunset for example. Anyway beauty is a very subjective concept, colored a lot by our emotions.

Is art a depiction of popular culture? Its critique through artwork. Does every age have its own definition of art...its own set of art work? Years from now what would be termed 'art' - a brilliant code, web designs, cool blogs???

What features do things we call works of art have in common - if any.

The Sistine Chapel, Degas' paintings, Beethoven' 'Ode to Joy', Shakespeare's Hamlet... Why does everyone universally agree on them being works of art? Is art then something that moves us, challenges us, takes us to newer heights we didn't know we could reach. Not only challenges our minds but moves our heart
Or is it the result of the flexing of power of some members of the community, who deem something as 'art' and people follow in droves?

Can it be what connects some atavistic part of our brain to another's'?

In my opinion, art calls out to the ancient in us - before we became modern. It taps into the divine in all of us because it transcends mortality and mediocrity to reach beyond and create something majestic. Something that awes and stuns with its sheer magnificence, its power.

Much like most philosophical ramblings this one doesn't have an answer that can fit like a formula - everyone will have their opinion about it. But then thats what so great about being....it is what can be termed 'art'

Insane in the Membrane!

Doing this insane assignment on Services Marketing. This professor of mine has got to be the most brilliant man I have ever met in my life - and totally unconventional too. He has done quantum mechanics, is a professional carpenter, biker, can speak 3/4 languages and god knows what else. His brain is razor sharp. Seriously I feel rather dull-witted in his presence.

Any way coming back to the assignment - he has told us to choose 2 services, compare them and make a scrapbook. We can do whatever we like, paint on it, write or type its up to us, as long as we cover all the topics. He wants to do a complete comparative analysis.

My group took Costa Coffee and Starbucks - so I am sitting here cutting chart paper into a large rectangular blocks, all the group members will meet tomorrow and we will tie the various pages with a piece of rope. So for the past few hours I have been taking printouts of a lot of interesting pictures... and gluing them. The writing part of the assignment I had done earlier. Thank god for that!

The only thing is that I suck at arts and crafts I mean I can't even cut paper straight. And to top it all I have become weirdly obsessed with blogging. So instead of concentrating on my assignment I have been taking innumerable blogging breaks...

So even now I write this post with a guilty feeling sneaky up on me... but its okay

I'll just stay up all night and finish this sucker.

By the way if you read this please tell me which you prefer and why
Costa Coffee or Starbucks

The Case of the Road that Vanished

I was on my way to College today, we had to go to do our group work assignment and I had asked one of my group members to pick me up.

I was showing off my knowledge of the shortest route to college, the one I take everyday... we are driving along and all of a sudden the turn that we always takes seems to have disappeared. We are lost and I'm aghast especially since for half the drive I had been boasting about the superiority of the route I took everyday
I am shocked - a road is a physical tangible reality wtf where did it go? A road can't just vanish into thin air!

The route I have been using it for months had changed in a span of one week.
It was shocking and funny in a not so amusing way as we were getting late for college.

After repeating 'how the **** can a road vanish' over and over, till my friend must have wanted to choke me to silence. I realized that of course the road had not disappeared only our access to it had changed.

Much like life... sometimes our path gets lost and we think its gone - its not gone. Just the way to get to the road has changed - the road is still there. We can reach it if we try to find another route that leads to it. Just access it from a different angle

It was such a subtle realization... exquisite even.

Unfortunately I don't think I did justice in the way I described it. But sometimes words no matter how well strung together can never do justice to a thought!
