Had they lived....

Do you think Romeo and Juliet would have been as immortal in life as they are in death... I mean had they lived and got married and had a little brood, would they be as famous and as oft-quoted as they are now? Would their love story still been called the greatest love story of all time - a perfect ode to love?

Yeah right! Romeo never had to see Juliet first thing in the morning and Juliet never heard Romeo snoring...

Tragedy is what lends so much allure to love stories... allow them to play out and reach their natural life cycle and like everything else they would soon reach the maturity stage... and dying for each other would appear to be slightly foolish... if not downright ridiculous

Love changes...it grows deeper and the thumping heart and jelly knees turns into a different kind of emotion... it becomes real and like everything real it stops being a perfect little fairy tale.

It's more meaningful because it's accepted with all its flaws and imperfections... it turns into acceptance and respect and the desire to make things work even when the going gets a bit rough.

It's a strange kind of friendship...a paradox - someone capable of hurting you worse than anyone ever could...at the same time someone who can make you the happiest you've been...

It's being accepted even after you've made an ass of yourself at times... it's making room for another in your precious space. It's allowing the heart to open up a little more every day to accommodate each others' insecurities and ego, unspoken fears and vanities.

It's doing little things for one another....it's unconsciously turning in the night and feeling thankful for the person next to you... feeling content at knowing there is someone out there who knows you better than you think they know you...

Someone who you may fight with and exchange cruel words with...but someone who is still there in the morning...someone you may walk away mentally from, time to time...but someone you return to each time.

Someone tied to you with the most fragile of bonds....yet often the one most difficult to break...

You put it so eloquently and it is very true, the ones you love the most will hurt you the most.

That is so true! You have summarised it so well! If only there are more matured adults like you, there would be less broken hearts in this world....

...thank you both.

Although you should see me maturity level when I fight with my husband ;)

you have the answers to questions i haven't thought of....in what seems like forever....

you are very lucky to be in the relationship when you realize these things,, instead of looking back at what you really miss about it...

Not sure how I landed here but it was a welcomed respite from my work day today in Chicago. I found your thoughts and the questions you propose interesting. Hope to make it back here sometime. Interesting 5th Degree quote.

With all stories, people remember the tragic endings more than the happy ones. And by ending the Romeo and Julliet story the way they did, people got to side step the snoring and all the other things that come with having a relationship that aren't so sexy. Romantic but not realistic.

However if you can find someone that will except those things it's a wonderful thing indeed. It's also very scary. No fun getting hurt. It's such an empowering and devastating thing all at once. Well said Random Magus.

Hi Amber, wonderful post! You're so right, and I guess those who are attached can really relate to your post.

"it becomes real and like everything real it stops being a perfect little fairy tale."

That's so true! At the end of the day, it's the comfort, acceptance, and security that matter most and in more ways than one, these feelings overcome all the thrills you experience during your single life :)

If a couple makes it past the fairytale beginnings of a relationship only then can the real connection begin. Romeo and Juliet couldn't even really start their affair before it was squelched and resistance to love's beginnings always seems to increase the bonds as well.
That's how me and my hub got started, against the grain, fighting for our right to be together and we won every day for the last ten years.

Be well and enjoy the day.

WOW! LOVED this post!

You're right about Romeo and Juliet he he he he...they're "lucky" in the way that their love is never tested too much he he he...but "unlucky" that they've never really known how great their love is by being tested by time and trials and everything else. Now I'm going in circles he he he...

Simply put, this is really a BEAUTIFUL post. :-)))

THX for your comment on my Dad. Hope your Dad's getting better and better. :-))) I know my Dad needs to practice walking and other stuff still, but good thing it's still 5 months away from my bro's wedding. Hope he'll be okay by then. :-)))

Surjit: Thank you very much indeed

Jeff: I find this quote pretty funny...“To keep your marriage brimming, With love in the loving cup, Whenever you're wrong, admit it; Whenever you're right, shut up” - Ogden Nash

Mariuca: ... and plus if you don't take yourselves too serious, it's a lot of fun as well

Danielle: wow... so you prove that Romeo and Juliet would still been the perfect couple... may you always stay like this

Amel's Realm: I am so glad to hear...my dad's recovery is going a bit slow... he needs to practice walking as well. I wish your dad a speedy recovery...

Wow. Now my theory of Romeo and Juliet is that Romeo went after things he knew he couldn't have. But that's a whole different post there. Your points open my mind on this subject, it points out that we fall for some qualities but need to take everything that the person is. The main thing about the story is that it was young forbidden love that never had a chance to grow into something more. Your point of view is a great and beautiful one on one of the oldest Tragic love stories.

Beautiful, Random, just beautiful.

You know, I think I prefer the challenging beauty of real love over the "romantic" versions, like Romeo and Juliet. pity more book and movie writers couldn't realise that.

Terry: I think anything forbidden becomes so much more tantalizing...

Michelle: Thank you so much... I guess we all prefer to do things that are easy and sure to pander to preconceived notions... plus i guess a tragic story would have more obvious drama

It's wonderfull, the way you describe the essence of love between two people, the essence of life itself, as far as I'm concerned! Beautiful post!

very well stated. If only I had thought if some of these things during any of my relationships I might not be alone today. I am saving this one to use when/if I am ever in a relationship again.

"feeling content at knowing there is someone out there who knows you better than you think they know you"

I love this post, Random, because it captures the finest essence of what the reality of love is. And, the reality is - in my mind and heart - much more valuable than any fairy tale could ever be.

Lovely post, RM. It's exactly how I feel in my relationship :)
I've always loved those sad, tragic love stories like "Romeo and Juliet" but it's true that we don't know how they'd have continued... Reminds me of something a friend used to say to me about her favourite film, "The Bridges of Madison County". (Spoiler of the movie coming). She was sure they wouldn't have been able to have an everlasting love if they'd stayed together and even though we'll never know that (as with "Romeo and Juliet"), we like to think they could have, as we wish we'll be able to :)

Epimenide: Thank you

Meleah Rebeccah: my only advice [although I'd be the worst person to advice] just loose the preconceived notions of what it 'ought' to be

HollyGL:... thanks... I think the hardest part starts after the romantic movie closes with 'the end'

Wonder: I pray that Id be able to... but its nice knowing that despite the imperfections we are still going strong...
